Heathen Harvest:
This release really caught my eye when I first spotted it in my review pile. The title is the first thing that attracted me, as it's a sentiment I can agree with. Visually the album art is completely black with a simple old photograph in the middle. Having never heard anything from either StillStand or label tosom I wasn't sure what to expect but was definitely intrigued. Peace (Is The End Of All Media Transmissions) is a single 52 minute track of dark ambient soundscapes. Distorted voices, long echoed drones, and pulsing frequencies lead the listener on a journey through the deluge of media-filled noise that is modern life. Throughout the length of the track the sounds shift from quite dense layers of overwhelming noise to verry minialist ambient segments. I've often found that attempts at single track releases leave me bored part way through but that isn't the case for this release. The range of dynamics and skillful composition keeps me engaged for the whole journey. At various points I find myself drifting into a meditative state before coming back to focus on absorbing the sounds in a more active way. StillStand has managed to produce a really high standard dark ambient release that can stand alongside any of the best from labels such as Cold Meat Industry. I highly recommend this album to any fan of dark ambient and soundscape orientated music. You will not be disappointed. With this release being limited to 122 copies you'd better get in quick before the rush.
